Hello all,

What a great site to pull the mass of information from the web and present in a clear and concise IT focused area.

I am currently Director of IT Field Services, ensuring IT infrastructure in the high-risk banking/healthcare payment solution sectors.  I spent roughly 5 years in Healthcare IT
as a Systems Admin / Project Manager, and was an RN for 5 years before that.  I finished an MBA last year and have actively started seeking new opportunities within healthcare.  In my biased opinion, I feel that I have a unique skill set to offer with my clinical and IT backgrounds.

How do you see the role of CIO's or Executive level positions changing within the healthcare industry?

In my job searches I have noticed that most positions will lean heavily on 8 -10 years previous healthcare IT professional experience and education takes a backseat.
Though my current job does deal with healthcare (~ 50% of our business), it is not in a clinical setting.  I feel that some may look at my resume and see a gap in
years of IT healthcare, not accounting my 10 years in my present position.

What would be some suggestions for me to get back into the IT Healthcare sector without having to move back into a technical position or take demotion?

Thanks for your input...

I believe that the CIO / CTO role will become less health care centric and more core IT.  The health care industry is going through many of the same changes that existed in the rest of the world in the mid 80's and early 90's.  IT is finally being leveraged as an industry enhancement instead of simply a tool to get faster financial reports.

Health care will go through substantial evolution over the next ten years.  I expect the CIO role to do the same thing.

I have to agree w/ @rilescat - the BEST thing to happen to healthcare is to drop this ludicrous requirement on degrees\certifications and HEALTHCARE specific experience.

Any good technologist - and that should always include CIO\CTO's, should be able to play in any field well and pick it up as they go along.

The single worst thing any healthcare org looking to evolve past historic constraints could do would be to hire someone with more healthcare experience than enterprise IT experience (sorry docs, this means you) unless they have a proven track record that doesn't indicate bias.

While everyone should have a voice, the enterprise technologist hired as a CIO\CTO is the one that needs an equal vote as a partner to the business.

Hi,

I'm a public policy consultant for health care entities and assist clients in creating policies that are balanced by outputs (tangible measures or metrics of performance) and outcomes and impacts (things that really create change in a local area).

Having served on several informatics positions, I also have the unique vision of seeing how EMR and social media can complement each other in achieving efficiency and clarity in health care.
