Excellent Web site! I wondered if I would be able quote a portion of your pages and use a couple of points for a school assignment. Please drop me an email whether or not that would be fine. Thanks

An OHSU physician--on the faculty no less--diagnosed me as having "bipolar disorder" because I participated in non-violent acts of "civil disobedience" and said I was "angry at the government" on the day before the national mobilization for single payer last October. The physician also wrote, in my medical record, that I had other symptoms which I successfully masked because of "my high intellect and level of functioning" (a more parsimonious explanation would be that said symptoms are invisible because they're not there). That said diagnosis was not based on any legitimate evidence is obvious to even the most casual observer who reads the diagnostic criteria for said condition ... I have tried working within the hospital system where, alas, reason does not prevail. Contacting a lawyer and the state insurance department sound like good ideas.

When medical records are inaccurate, the only solution is to be persistent, aggressive, annoying and "on these insurance companies" to clear it up and here's what works .. and I know because I've just been there on behalf of a family member:

#1 - A letter from an attorney
ALONG WITH
#2 - Contacting your state Commissioner of Insurance

From the attorney its pretty clear that you will talk about the legal consequences you will throw at them over denial of employment due to "non existing conditions" and the Commissioner of Insurance offices across the country are really in there getting relief for lots of people/families over pre existing conditions that "don't really exist" and any other inaccuracies.

But you have to be persistent because it takes months during which time you generally get the luxury of COBRA or some other outrageously expensive plan that offers minimal coverage
