The state of Health Information Exchange report is based on a sixth annual report. The report shows that despite the challenges that exist, steady progress is being made across the country. According to the report there are 193 active health information exchange initiatives, with fifty-seven that reported being operational in 2009 – this is up from 42 initiatives in 2008 representing a nearly 40 percent increase. Forty of the fifty-seven operational exchange organizations reported a variety of cost savings resulting from health information exchange activities.
The report highlights how health information exchange has had a positive impact on physician practices allowing them to become more efficient without disrupting care, and has resulted in reduced cost and increased efficiency in a variety of practice settings.
