The folks over at MedPageToday have a write up for Acetominophen labels. They are looking at some compelling health risk data and taking corrective action. Upon reading the article I wonder about the “Meaningful Use” draft that recently came out from the Health Advisory Committee.
If your facility now sits on an EMR, you must consider the amount of time and effort that your IT and Informatics support folks will be using to update your electronic systems. Will drug interactions have to change? Will warning screens need to be available in CPOE? Will warnings need to exist in the Pharmacy applications? Believe me, I am all for EHR/EMR systems. I think they are essential to safety and quality. However, I still bristle at the thought of “lowering costs” with EMRs. Only time will tell if we can really reduce health care costs via electronic systems.
