It seems that the only thing video games have done for health care is to add a new ICD-9 code and diagnosis for “Gamers Thumb”. However, it seems that the Nintendo Wii has added some much needed excitement around a new application type that can add to health care quality.
The Wii-habilitation application is being used for muscle and physical therapy rehab at several systems across the nation. It is very encouraging to see this as publicity around this type of innovation may inspire today’s 20-something gamers to take a new look at how they can implement technology and health care in the future. If nothing else, Nintendo may open a new window for physicians and IT to partner on an entirely new field.
So do you suppose that Medicare and Medicaid will reimburse us for this type of rehab?
