One of the few comprehensive comparitive metrics that exist in Health Information Technology is the “Most Wired 2009″ survey by Hospitals & Health Networks.
I use this survey every year. I am not interested in winning the award. I am interested in determining a baseline of performance for my organizations. This survey gives a good indication of forward progress in relation to the performance of other sites.
The key areas this survey measures are:
Business Processes
Customer Service
Safety & Quality
Workforce
Public Health & Safety
Each of these areas produce a solid scoring system (broken down by individual sub-areas) that can be used to align projects, or balance initiatives from the perspective of future strategic plans. I certainly wouldn’t change my entire environment on this single metric, but it is a very solid guide.
My teams take approximately 80 hours to complete the survey each year. We submit the survey in March and usually receive results back in mid-July.
